All parents experience moments when they may resent parts of their lives – parenting can be a thankless job at times, but for stepparents, who may take on many parental responsibilities without getting credit, the sense of resentment can be even greater.
Stepparents often deal with negative input from their spouse’s ex, who may be uncomfortable with a new person playing a role in the lives of the children, and even the kids themselves may not always be kind or welcoming.
So if stepparents are resentful at times, who could blame them?
Dealing with a Spouse’s Ex-Partner
Oftentimes, the biggest obstacles to a stress-free home life for stepparents come from the actions and attitudes of their spouse’s ex-partner. Exes often seem determined to cause trouble for their ex’s new family, refusing to allow the input of the spouse’s new partner to influence decisions about the children and even discouraging the kids from forming loving bonds with their stepparent.
While no one can control the actions or attitudes of another, stepparents may be able to minimise their frustration and resentment by requesting that their spouse intervene on their behalf, asking for at least respectful silence if true cooperation is out of the question. Unresolved issues between the children’s natural parents may prohibit the ex from ever accepting their children’s stepparent or appreciating the things that they do for the kids, but it isn’t unreasonable to expect that they could at least refrain from outward rudeness or troublesome behaviour.
Coping with Ungrateful Stepchildren
Kids often take it for granted that their needs will be met. Young children, especially, are inclined to simply expect things to be done for them without expressing gratitude to those who make it their business to provide.
As they get older, though, children should begin to understand that parents and stepparents typically work very hard to provide all that the kids need and often do without so that their children can have more. While a certain amount of gratitude doesn’t seem like an unreasonable hope, not all kids let their parents know that they are appreciative – some go so far as to complain incessantly about what they don’t have, rather than being thankful for their blessings.

The Importance of Expressing Emotions
Rather than being silent in their resentment, stepparents should express their need to have their contributions recognised and acknowledged. Sometimes, families have operated in a manner for years, never realising that their actions may be hurtful to other members. When a stepparent joins a family and finds that their ways seem disrespectful, it is quite possible that family members are unaware of how they are being perceived unless it is brought to their attention.
It is important for family members to talk about their feelings and to let other members know what they need to feel loved. Some people need to hear that they are valued, while others prefer that those who care for them show their appreciation by offering help with chores and lightening their load of responsibilities. In either case, stepparents (and other family members) cannot expect others to automatically know what makes them happy – they need to speak up.
It has to be the hardest job in the world and I respect now anyone having to deal with the situation
My wife and her two sons aged 12,14 now come from Africa and myself am English .
5 years ago the boys joined us in England after my wife came over a few years before to set up life with me and then send for the boys.
Once we moved into our new house my wife would pick on everything I would do around the house with negative comments and when I asked the boys to do things she would change things I said.
Over time this has now led to the boys getting the idea that mom will stand up for them no matter what it may be leading to stress between me and the boys and more so between my wife and I.
I have asked my wife to have unity with me and set ground rules for the boys but she will not .
Now I am not allowed to say rhings to the boys without fear of backlash from my wife.
I am at a loss what to do.
No end of trying to reason with my wife or boys has no effect.
I know it alll seems like silly little things but over the time it has really got me down and I don’t know if I can carry on.
Any tips for coping with things like this.
I feel so bad for resenting the kids at time but I do at times. I had just moved in with their dad and then my life changed overnight and I struggle with the loss of my own life.
When to end a relationship?

mom wasn't making them a priority. She is 21 now and has a huge chip on her shoulder. She can be so rude. Especially to my youngest daughter. I am angry with my husband but mostly his ex for dropping the ball with the kids. I have worked for schools for a long time and now and last 4 years I have had a daycare in our home. So Monday thru Friday it is crazy and tiring. Now every Saturday we have our grandkids over night because my oldest stepdau
There are thousands of children who wish their fathers would even claim them, let alone fight to be a part of their lives and this little boy gets to tell his dad he wishes he didnt have to spend time with him? And when its time to pick him up this big 9yr old cries like he is a baby, while his 4yr old full brother looks at him like he is crazy!
His negativity changes the energy of the entire household and its very draining to try to maintain the fun goofy loving atmosphere we have with My husband, myself, my son & my husbands youngest son (the full brother of the 9yr old) whenever he is around. It it extremely upsetting as my son basically grew up without his biological father who barely wanted anything to do with him until he heard I was getting married. I watched my son cry wishing he had a dad & now I have to watch this little boy cry wishing he didn't have one. My husband bends over backwards and spends all kinds of money to make his experience with us very pleasurable but he is still ungrateful and disrespectful.
At the very least, there should be respect but every single time all he does is complain. It gets overwhelming
Ive raised a 14 year old Sdaughter since she was less than a year old. Dad went to prison..pops in before going back. Has NEVER paid a dime. And Ive been here. Worked the long a** hours..handed over the checks. Cooked the meals (wife wont cook. Cant. Wont.) after 10 hr shifts of a laborous job I hate..for YEARS. I cant correct the know-it-all without mom ONLY jumping to her defense. Setting the example of how Im to be treated..belittled, disrespected, and used. Like I HAVE to do this. She treats me like this is my bio daughter. Its so bizarre. The father NEVER gets the heat...BUT BOY I do when she believes ive failed. She will say "the girls" EVERYTIME. (We have a daughter and son together..and the step ive raised) But she speaks as if I HAVE to sacrifice all time..energy..finances...and BEING..as if I created this child also. Let me tell you...theres NOTHING quite so frustrating. IT HAS caused a deep resentment. The child knows mom will correct me...so she backtalks. Makes the faces. Expects the paychecks and conveniences of me laboring to death without a thank you..EVER. I think Im done. 14 years..long time..I know. But I cannot take another DAY of ungrateful expectations, while the donor gets off scott free. It would be a bit different..but I mean I have NEVER heard a thank you. ONLY more demands and expectations for how I should be raising her child. Sheesh!!
I'm talking having been physically and emotionally abused, financially ruined, put upon, etc., by the dad, and it has never occurred to me to resent the kids.
Currently I'm married to a wonderful, kind, loving, supportive man who has been doing his best to take on my children as his own. Sadly, though, especially given what they've been through in their lives, they are admittedly not as expressive or outwardly grateful as one would hope.
Our youngest, in particular, is very much of the stay in her room variety. She is a typical high-schooler, for which I'm very glad, given what she has suffered at the hands of her biodad and her stepmothers (yes, plural).
Unfortunately, my husband is feeling vastly underappreciated, to the extent that he expresses that he feels his life is in ruins, especially financially. He is not enjoying that feeling of having a happy, united family, which would at least make the sacrifices seem worth it. And, yes, there are always seemingly constant complications and problems created by the kids' presence in our lives. And, as my husband puts it, each day gets worse and worse and there doesn't seem to be any way out of it.
My basic question at this point is, how do I address this with my kids, without making them feel like if my husband and break up it's their fault? How do I get them to show more gratitude, family involvement, etc.?
There are now 6 grandkids and I’m expected to babysit regularly, drop everything to run to their aid when there is a problem and to help out financially. My husband has developed a serious neurological condition so I’m the breadwinner. My husband is besotted with one son in particular and every opportunity he can he’s away out with him. I feel ignored and resentful. I know it’s an honour to be offered an opportunity to develop a relationship with his grandkids. In truth they seem fond of me but I feel nothing for them. I find them irritating, rude, indulged and exhausting to be around. I do try my best to mask these feelings so they dont get hurt. They are all toddlers so I’m often overwhelmed when I’m left with them and also keenly aware that not being their true grandmother I cannot discipline them without being criticised.
I work very hard but my husbands medical needs means we don’t have much savings and I’m keenly aware my earning years are rapidly drawing to a close so I can’t afford to leave the marriage.Life seems such a drudge. I know it’s not nice to be resentful of children and grandchildren but I do and my resentment is growing. I sometimes wish either my husband or I were dead so it was all over. I’m feel trapped.
I spent years trying to blend a family, with love and good intentions, it was all thrown in my face two years ago, I was attacked physically shouted at, and received a written abusive email to tell me just how much I was not liked, by the step kids and their partners. It was shocking to read my husband was devastated and very depressed about it, it was lies and very hurtful.
It came as a shock, to us as their mother left when they were young, chasing boyfriends and spending money on herself. Muggins thats me, took on the caring role put up with her flouncing in out the home and abusing her children.
We tried to make up for her lack of love, it was not the easiest of tasks as the daughter was against me from the start and still is, believing mother is wonderful. We hoped we could make good the terrible pain she caused them, now see that they are like her, in the DNA.
So now let the absent mother get on with it, I am done and out of the picture. My health has improved and we live miles away from them distance is a wonderful thing. Still suffer high anxiety and lack of self esteem but everyday gets better. All the anti step mother comments, there are no wicked step mothers just us good dedicated human beings who give it all we have, until we are broken. Sucked in!
.
Is there any hope for me and their father? The youngest is a narcissist/sociopath and he won’t straighten her out
At my house. Her boyfriend has been around since day 1 and she backs him up so child cannot abuse him like I get verbally. He only talks to his dad when he wants money or video games and lives with us 50% of the time. I have managed to hold on somehow but with the kid getting more manipulative what do I do?
I have had 2 step children for about 6 years. I have always had a good relationship with the younger one but things have been challenging with the younger one since she realised I was her dad's girlfriend.
I continue to make an effort with her - things like giving gifts, trying to chat and doing her hair, as well as the usual cooking, cleaning etc, however she consistently fails to show me respect. This ranges from looking at others when talking to me, giving me the silent treatment, deliberately doing the opposite of what I say etc.
She is now an adolescent and has become very insular, despite this I try to find activities that she would like to do and ask her for ideas but she isn't interested.
She was recently very rude to me, screaming and telling me to shut up (not the first time) She has now said I'm the reason she doesn't want to come to our house (every other weekend).
She seems to think I am the reason her parents aren't together, however this isn't the case. Indeed, her step dad has been with her mum for about the same time as we have been together.
I now try to arrange to see my friends on the weekends we have the children as it easier to remove myself from the situation, but this isn't resolving anything.
I don't know what to do, I have tried with her but she is continually rude. My OH is understanding but unfortunately the ex's view seems to be as adults we just need to get over this. Easier said than done when it has been happening for years.
Any thoughts?! Thanks.
As his other 2 and that I wish he would make me and this unborn baby a priority just for a little while for the sake of the baby's safe arrival. I've tried talking to him about how I feel he says I'm silly but his behaviour really makes me resent the kids. I dread them coming and get a rash on my chest when they are here through stress. I love him and don't want to be a single parent but I feel like I'm being eaten alive with resentment and bitterness at the moment. I don't know how much longer I can cope with this situation. Anybody been in a similar situation?
Resentment is an emotional I feel every second I am disregarded by the children. I pour my heart and soul into everything I do for them and I love them dearly but they are so unappreciative, to the point where I have become very depressed. I come home from work and feel so invisible, no thanks, no hugs, no love. I am unable to have children and so every rejection I feel is another blow to my heart. I would do anything for them but they don't care.
I've been with my partner for a year and a half officially ... although we've known each other a lot longer and we have an amazing relationship . Over the past year we've kept our relationship separate from my 3 year old . However I have now confronted him about it and said it's time we start making tracks with you and her to think about our future together . He freaked out . He said at the beggining he was okay with her but now he's struggling to accept her . He gets annoyed about the situation . He isn't jealous and he doesn't dislike her but he said he really wants to accept her and wants to want to be part of her life but he feels he can't and never will . He wants advice and to try anything to help him over come this feelings towards her and obviously I do too. I don't know what to say or what steps to put in place to support him as my daughters is dying to get to know him and she's such a pleasing little girl . It's ripping me into two x
This has taken its toll on our marriage. We argue all the time because I often go out with friends when I'm off to get away from it all. At this point I'm not happy and thinking about divorce because after 4 years it hasn't gotten any better. Unless you are a step parent you cannot understand the resentment I feel.I sacrificed so much to bring them here and the daughter hates it here, she resents me and her mom for taking her away from her life she had before. She doesn't want to go back, because all her friends have moved on several have already had a child. She has no ambition , no goals, has no plan and just sits around the house wasting her life away.
I talked to the wife and she is just as stressed because she will lose me because her kids rejected me as a step father.
A forum but this time I feel lost with it all.
Love you,
Thierno
Since being back in contact, I have had nothing to do with them, he sees them without me (as he always has done) and this worked OK until I found out two years ago, quite by default, that he had taken a loan out for the younger daughter and not told me about it. He had also been giving his elder daughter £300 a month for some time "as she was struggling" and I never knew. She has since conceded that she wasn't struggling at all. I had trusted him implicitly to sort our finances (we both worked full time) and never questioned anything so to say I felt betrayed is an understatement.
I took a stronger interest in our finances since finding out about his deceit and insisted I would be the purchaser of all the presents in future as he had been handing over hundreds of pounds at a time. I have bent over backwards to ensure all the presents are very thoughtful and beautifully wrapped. I also insisted we all meet up so that I could tell all present exactly what was going to happen. This ended in a slanging match and I was screamed at that I am "pure evil and its a good job her husband isn't there as he'd rip my head off". My partner sat there and said absolutely nothing, he just let us get on with it, despite there being two of them and one of me.
Allegedly, thereafter he told his daughter that she was totally out of order and she apparently was sorry - he told me it would never happen again. Well, I have further been treated in the most disgusting fashion a couple of weeks ago, but each time, my partner absolves his daughter's behaviour as being influenced by another, whether it be by the biological mother, her husband, auntie etc.
Once again, he maintains he has told her she was wrong, she has apologised and so it goes on. I am now at the end of my rope. I want out but he professes his undying love for me. He acknowledges that his daughters have treated me unjustly and undeservedly but he continues to want to "not rock the boat". Nothing is ever resolved and I'm afraid the resentment I feel towards him outweighs the love I have left. It has slowly been eroded away over the years.
I thought once they had their own children they would be seen as the adults they are and we could get on with our lives. Sadly, this does not seem to be the
They are really good kids and I have known them for a long time now but only been in a realationship with their mum around 4months but they go crazy if I touch her or kiss her, even if we are in the settee together. The eldest won't even go to bed until we are asleep and she's always in and out!!!!
When I'm there I play games and watch TV with them, we walk the dog and basically give them loads of attention but as soon as I touch or kiss their mum they start saying things like you can't touch my mum and your not allowed to kiss her and they don't like me but as soon as I'm not there they want me to come round and she has to ring me just so they can talk to me. I feel like it's a loosing battle sometimes and other times I don't even want to be there because of it but I love her and I really like them when there not being like that
I know it's tough on them but sometimes it drives me wild and I feel like we can't ever just relax.
I know it will get better and I will keep working at it I just couldn't do with some pointers or any Advice really
I'm really looking for some advice. I am the step-mum of my husbands 21year old son. I'm finding increasingly more difficult each and every day that my step son is in the house due to the way my husband just lets him get away with doing 'not much' . My step son has been unemployed for over 18months, and not really in my opinion being really actively making it a priority to get work. My husband and I are arguing more and more as he lets his son do pretty much whatever he likes with not having any responsibilities which I feel is essential for him to learn about 'life' and to help him develop essential life skills. My husband treats him like a child and feels I'm being completely unreasonable and unfair. We have such differences in opinions when it comes to parenting and this worries me. I have a 9 year old son to a previous partner and I know I would never allow my son to do as my step-son does but the whole situation is causing a lot of stress. Please let me know if you think I'm being unreasonable. Many thanks in advance.
Many thanks
Jenny
By suggesting that you are putting someone else’s needs first you will create a reaction that stimulates interaction and communication, and will mean that your needs are considered also. Reverse psychology can be used successfully in difficult relationships that include some form of power struggle. This does not, however, mean pretending or lying in order to get your own way. Using reverse psychology techniques enables you to influence by suggestion, which means that the other person will become more willing to prove a point or act out of character in order to do as you want. Difficult to sustain, I know, but I hope this helps.
He is 16 this has gone on the last 5yrs when do I just say "ENOUGH" I even tried family counseling and the therapist was mocked and made fun of by him so she said she could no longer have us as patients
While she is an outstanding mum, I'm at a bit of a loss as to how to best support my partner as she confided over the weekend that since our daughter was born, she finds dealing with my other child increasingly difficult. She specifically cites that she finds it borderline offensive when friends and family (on either side) say how alike the baby is to her older sibling, to whom my partner has no connection. Similarly, seeing me interact with both the girls also makes her feel removed and peripheral as the three of us share a blood bond.
I've tried to help rationalise the situation, but it is really just an emotional issue - meaning there seems to be little I can do to reassure or help.
Has anyone else experienced this and successfully worked it through, as I'm worried that these kind of feelings, left unchecked could undermine our relationship.
My concerns are always around getting her to sort out her own mistakes so she will learn and hopefully not do the samething over and over. I have a tendancy to be direct and tell her where she is going wrong. Not the best approach i know but i get frustrated with the way he coaches and councils then ends up solving her problems.
The end result she continues to repeat her mistakes.
How do I get my husband to consider a different approach without him thinking that i am critical of how he raises his daughter?
I am struggling with making boundaries with the mother of my stepson. She made it clear I am not allowed to call myself the stepmother. She said I am the wife of my husband but no stepmother. My husband took her 3 year old son for 5 months this year. Before that she had told my husband he would never be allowed to see his son at all. But then she needed a break and went on holiday for two months and then work-travel for three months and decided he could stay with us. My stepson did say to me sometimes, 'You are my other mother.' And I told him simply. 'No, I am not your mother, my name is A.' We still developed a bond, though I have been careful upon his mother's request not to get too close to him. In the beginning, I was told I was not to hug him, let him sit in my lap or comfort him if he fell down and hurt himself. In the beginning she did not even want to allow me to eat with my stepson and my husband at the dinner table but my husband was able to convince her that was not really sensible. Recently she moved into the same town as my husband and I and is working. She works late so it is my husbands job to bring his son to bed. Often at our house because he does not want to stay at her house until 10 or midnight in the evening 5 nights a week. Then he puts his son to bed at our house in his own bed. Sometimes when my stepson is scared or very early in the morning he comes into our bedroom and climbs in our bed, always on my husband's side. Often I did not even wake up when he did this so didn't notice until later. The mother is extremely angry about this, that her son would be in the same bed as me, and says he is no longer allowed to sleep at our house because we have not followed her rules. She is not allowing my husband contact with his son this week, saying 'he spends enough time with him.' I have always tried to be really understanding of her and I have bit my tongue on so many things even when I disagree with her because it is such a delicate situation and because I believe she really might take his son away and say he is not allowed anymore contact. My husband really wants to be in his son's life. Right now I am pretty angry at her. I don't want to take over the mother role. I don't even necessarily need to be called 'stepmother.' I feel the urge to explain to her how difficult it is to keep her son out of our bed, especially if neither of us wake up when he climbs in bed. My husband does not want to sleep in his son's room or wake up at 3, 4, 5 in the morning and put him to bed. She does not want me to put him to bed at all. Any advice?
